How to install a Voodoo Banshee/Voodoo3
This is written for the vary new Linux newbie. I first
installed Linux as a dual boot system with Win98 and
Redhat. I didn't even know how to get to the floppy.
Well with some help and head scratching I got it. This
is how it is done.
If you have Windows installed log on to the net and
download:
XFree86_3DFX-SVGA-3.3.3-5.i386.rpm
XFree86_3DFX-XF86Setup-3.3.3-5.i386.rpm
from http://glide.xxedgexx.com/3DfxRPMS_vb_glibc.html
and put them on floppy disks, the files should fit on
two disks. Then remove the floppy and boot up Linux.
When you first boot up Linux you will be at the CLI.
Log in as root (don't start x!!!) then insert the floppy
disk with the files you downloaded in Windows. Then
type....
mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
cd /mnt/floppy
ls (you will see the rpm's)
rpm -U *.rpm (do this to both floppies)
cd/
XF86Setup
You will now find your banshee/Voodoo3 in the card listing.
Pick your card and monitor ect. Then close XF86Setup
and type.
startx
After you are done with that you can try to get the
3D part of the card going by going back to http://glide.xxedgexx.com/3DfxRPMS_vb_glibc.html
and reading Daryll Strauss instructions. We all owe
Daryll a big thank you for doing this for us! If you
need help I will watch the message board but you should
be able to get it on your own.
