Star Office Install NHF

1. Download the file from Sun to your tmp directory (must be a directory accessible from Other so don't put it in your root directory).

2. Extract the file with "tar -xvf filename.tar" where filename.tar is the file that you downloaded. If it's a .gz file (you know, I already forget), do "gunzip filename.gz before you tar the .tar file.

3. A directory will be created called so51inst which contains two directories: documentation and office51. The documentation directory has a nice Adobe Acrobat installation manual in it if you need more detailed help.

4. At the command prompt, type "cd so51inst/office51" if you're in the tmp directory or "cd /so51inst/office51" if you're somewhere else.

5. From the office51 directory, type "./setup" and let the instllation routine do its thing. It will prompt you for the installation directory so choose something like Other/Office 51 (or whatever directory you have access to from Other).

6. Once StarOffice is set up under Other, logout and login as root. Go to Panel -> Edit Menus where you can add a launch button by pathing to /Other/Office51/bin/soffice.

7. You should now be able to access StarOffice from both IDs. Note that if you install it first from root, you'll have problems setting it up to run under Other (at least I did).

8. You'll have to play around with the Internet and e-mail configurations to get them to work. I still don't have e-mail working. Hope that helps and good luck.

Sensei's Tidbit:

9. To run Star Office just type in a xterm: soffice &

10. To create an icon in kde...Right click on the desktop and create a new icon. Then where it has the section execute, insert soffice &.

Note added:
by Bill L

If SO is installed as root, and the 'net' option is used. it will install as usual in /opt/office51, or whatever directory is chosen for the root install.
Then the 'OTHER' users(s) can 'install' it in their $HOME folders. It will use up a bit of room for the each user area, but will run the execuatables from the install directory using the users preferences.

This can be done on a standalone system as well where there may be multiple users wanting their own SO setups and configurations.

I believe this is how the documentation pdf file explains it ( sort of anyways)

We would like to hear your feedback.
