Getting Linux Online via a Windows Proxy using AnalogX

note: This nhf is excellent if you want to use your Linux machine behind a Windows machine on a network, but share a connection. Many newbies want to use Linux as a secondary machine because of their newness to the OS.

Intro:

This document is intended for those of you who are having trouble figuring how to configure PPP networking for your Linux box. Or maybe you found out too late that you have a WinModem, and haven't gotten around to getting a new one. I found a great temporary solution for those of you who want to be able to get online on your Linux box using your other Windows box as a Proxy server, bypassing your PPP networking headaches. This is a great way for you to get online with your Linux box to download the drivers you need to compile/install to get all your hardware in your Linux box running. Then you can break your tether to the Windows box if you want to!

This document assumes:

* That you have a properly configured Windows Box that can get online via modem PPP networking.

* That you have another box running a flavor of Linux with Netscape on it.

* That these two boxes have a TCP network connection to one other. This requires that both your Windows and Linux Boxes have networking set up. Your Linux box should be able to ping your windows box's IP address.

Steps

First order of business is to mosey over to http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/proxy.htm

Download their nifty proxy software (Its free! And only 200-ish KB! I have no connection to this company, I'm simply a happy user of their software)

Install the Proxy server on your Windows box. Consult the readme file that comes with it. Has everything you need to know and more.

In your Linux Box:
Netscape
Edit>Preferences>Advanced>Proxies

Pick "Manual Proxy Configuration" radio button, and hit VIEW button next to it.

Put in your Windows Box's (the one that runs the Proxy server) IP address, and port 6588 for both HTTP and SECURITY proxies.

Leave everything else alone… or read the note below:

(NOTE: I haven't messed with anything in there except HTTP and SECURITY entries so if you do this, you're on your own! Again, consult the readme that comes with the proxy for more information)

Exit Netscape Preferences.

Enter a website address! It should be working now!

TROUBLESHOOTING:

If you get an DNS error, you probably didn't set up your proxy correctly, OR your Linux box is not seeing your Windows Box's IP. Verify by pinging your window's IP# and also its Computer Name.

Good Luck!
