Installing packages using YaST in SuSE 6.x
Written by: Klaus VonStein

YaST is an acronym for Yet another Setup Tool, which is the central configuration program of SuSE. YaST handles system administration, integration of new hardware, and package management for the distribution as well. YaST can also resolve package dependencys.

I will be installing OSS in this example.

1. Place the SuSE #1 CD into your CD-ROM

2. Start YAST

3. Select "Choose/Install Packages"

4. Select "Change/Create Configuration"
You will now see the series of packages that are available to you. OSS is a commercial sound driver so commercial means PAY.

5. Scroll down until you get to the "pay" series of packages and hit enter.
All the packages available to you in the pay series are now displayed. I you notice the "i" to the left of a package that means it's already been installed.

6. Scroll down until you get to "opso"
There are several different oss packages you can install so just select the one you want by pressing the Enter Key. You will now see an "X" placed next to the package you selected.

7. Once you've selected the package you want, hit th F-10 key then hit the F-10 key again.

8. Scroll down to "Start Installation" and press the "Enter" key.

9. YaST will check for dependencies, once it does that then select "Continue" and SuSE will install the package then bring you back to the previous menu.

10. Select "Main Menu" and you will then see YaST making some changes so be patient.

11. Once the "Continue" button turns blue just hit "Enter"

12. You are now back to the main YaST menu screen. Scroll down and select "Exit YaST" then hit "Enter"

That's it, your done and now you know how to install packages using YaST.

We would like to hear your feedback.
